From Alisa Herman-Liu: My husband and I adopted our oldest daughter on a cold winter morning in Hefei, Anhui province. After breakfast, our group was told to gather in a meeting room at the hotel and wait for our babies. When we arrived, there was chaos - babies crying, nannies arriving with more children, parents-to-be trying to figure out which baby was theirs. One by one, the babies were handed to their new families. Finally, after all the waiting, our daughter was placed in my arms. As I looked at her for the first time, I noticed the outfit she was wearing-a quilted top, split pants and Baby Gap socks. To us it represented what her life would be - a melding of cultures. Every time I look at this outfit I am reminded of where she is from and the traditions of her land of birth as well as where she is now and and her future in the United States. It makes us realize that it is our responsibility as parents to maintain ties to her birth culture while she is being raised as an American citizen. This is a true Chinese-American experience! |
